Once your photo has been converted into blocks, the editor is where you clean it up — fixing skin tones, sharpening outlines, swapping out blocks you cannot obtain in survival, and exporting a build you can actually place in your world.
Drop any PNG, JPG, BMP or WEBP onto the start screen. On the settings screen, tick Crop Image and drag the selection box over the part of the photo you actually want to build. The crop box automatically matches whatever block dimensions you enter, so your subject is never stretched. Portraits and close-up faces convert far better than wide landscapes, because a face has strong tonal contrast that survives being reduced to a few hundred blocks.
Width and height are measured in blocks, not pixels. A 64 × 64 build is 4,096 blocks and takes an afternoon in survival. A 256 × 256 build is 65,536 blocks and is really a creative-mode project. Start small: you can always re-run the conversion at a larger size once you know the image works. Remember that Minecraft's world height limits how tall a vertical wall-mounted build can be unless you tick the height override.
The ALL palette gives the most accurate colours but includes blocks that are awkward in survival. SURVIVAL restricts the match to blocks you can realistically farm or craft. CUSTOM lets you tick individual blocks — useful if you want a build made only from wool, or only from concrete. Turning off gravity blocks stops sand and concrete powder falling out of a vertical build, and turning off light-emitting blocks keeps glowstone and froglights from lighting up your artwork at night.
On a computer, scroll the mouse wheel to zoom toward the cursor, and hold the Grab tool or the middle mouse button to pan. On a phone or tablet, pinch with two fingers to zoom and drag with two fingers to pan. Switch to the Grab tool if you want to move around with one finger without painting. The rulers along the top and left show block coordinates, which is how you locate a specific spot when you are copying the build in-game row by row.
Pencil paints a single block. Brush paints a circular or square area whose size you adjust with the [ and ] keys or the plus and minus buttons. Bucket flood-fills a connected region of identical blocks — ideal for flattening a noisy background into one clean colour. Eyedropper picks up whatever block you tap so you can paint with it; on desktop you can hold Ctrl and click to eyedrop without switching tools.
The most common cleanup jobs are smoothing dithering noise out of large flat areas like skies, and rebuilding facial features. Dithering scatters alternating blocks to fake in-between colours, which looks great from a distance but muddy on a small face.
Open Replace Blocks to change every instance of one block into another across the whole build. This is the fastest way to make a converted image survival-friendly: replace diamond blocks with light blue concrete, or replace every gravity-affected block with a solid equivalent. The Blocks panel lists every block currently used in your build along with its count, so you can see exactly what your material shopping list looks like before you commit.
Every stroke, fill and bulk replacement is recorded in the History panel. Press Ctrl + Z to step back and Ctrl + Y to step forward, or tap any entry in the history list to jump straight to that point. Nothing is destructive, so experiment freely — try a bold background colour and jump back if it does not work.
Save As → PNG downloads a picture of the finished artwork. Choose the quality multiplier first: 1× gives one pixel per block, while 6× renders each block at six pixels using its real Minecraft texture, which is what you want for sharing or printing. Save As → .mcfunction produces a command file you can drop into a datapack. Convert to Commands generates paginated command-block commands for building the artwork automatically in-game.
Minecraft's palette is limited. Bumping contrast and saturation in any photo app before you upload gives the colour matcher more to work with and produces a far more readable build.
Wall-mounted builds are viewed head-on, so they read exactly like the preview. Floor builds are viewed at an angle and appear squashed unless you stretch the height when converting.
Sand, gravel and concrete powder fall when placed on a vertical wall with nothing beneath. Disable gravity blocks in settings, or replace them afterwards in the editor.
The Blocks panel shows how many of each block your build needs. Scan it before starting a survival build — a design needing 4,000 blue concrete is a very different project from one needing 4,000 dirt.
Use the Bucket tool to turn a noisy background into a single flat colour. It costs fewer materials, builds faster, and makes the subject stand out much more clearly from a distance.
Export at 6× and keep the file open on a second screen or your phone while building. The rulers in the editor match the coordinates in the exported image, row for row.

Standard image converters often compute color matching using simple Euclidean distance in RGB color space:
Distance = √((R₁ - R₂)² + (G₁ - G₂)² + (B₁ - B₂)²)
However, human eyes do not perceive color variations linearly across Red, Green, and Blue channels. Standard RGB distance often matches skin tones to muddy greens, grays to desaturated purples, or fails on delicate highlights.
Our converter translates all RGB pixel values into the CIELAB ($L^*a^*b^*$) color space, which models human visual perception where $L^*$ represents lightness, $a^*$ represents the red-green axis, and $b^*$ represents the blue-yellow axis. By calculating Euclidean distances in CIELAB, the generator selects blocks that look naturally harmonious to the human eye, ensuring stunning color accuracy across photos, portraits, and vibrant digital illustrations.
Minecraft has a finite palette of roughly 150 solid buildable blocks. When converting photos with continuous gradients (such as sunsets, skies, or portraits), direct color matching can result in harsh color banding.
To solve this, our generator features Floyd-Steinberg Error Diffusion Dithering. When a pixel is quantized to the nearest Minecraft block, the numerical difference between the target pixel color and the actual block color (the quantization error) is dynamically distributed to neighboring adjacent pixels. This creates subtle optical color blending, allowing a modest block palette to simulate millions of shades effortlessly.
